If you’re looking to find video games kids love or you’re new to the world of gaming yourself, it can become somewhat overwhelming to select family-friendly video games that both you and your children can enjoy. Parents shouldn’t be misled by the numerous colorful and clever cover designs of video games. Those cute cartoon characters depicted on the front covers don’t necessarily equate to “family-friendly.” You might accidentally be purchasing an adult targeted shoot-em-up action game or something else you’d rather not have you child playing. Take the time to do a little research before you purchase a system or games to go along with that platform. There are some games that are exclusive to certain companies, but you can also find many family-friendly video titles that overlap onto other systems. It’s best to speak to a sales person at the store and ask your kids what type of games they might be interested in playing before purchasing a video game or system. Things to consider are price, content, and the availability of titles geared more towards children. For instance, Nintendo tends to be marketed more for the youth market but you can also find good family-oriented games on other platforms such as Xbox and PlayStation. Here are a few titles to introduce video games to both the young and adult beginners in your family.

This is one of the most popular video games in 2022. Turn dancing into an activity for the entire family. “Just Dance 2022” features tunes from some of the biggest names in popular music including Camila Cabello, Billie Eilish, Katy Perry, and others. American singer, songwriter, choreographer, Todrick Hall earned national recognition following his appearance on the ninth season of the popular TV Show “American Idol.” This game features an exclusive version of his tune “Nails, Hair, Hips, Heels.” Follow along as Todrick goes through the dance moves to his catchy number.

This is a fun way to get a workout as a family and test their dancing abilities. “Just Dance 2022” will also promote your child’s appreciation of music. If you have a family member who is a bit shy, you can use this game to laugh and smile as performers. Teach your children to express themselves through dancing. The game is available on multi-platforms including: Nintendo Switch, PlayStation 5, PS4, Xbox One, Xbox Series X|S, and Google Stadia.

Young children seem to enjoy puzzle platform games where they can move silly characters around a wacky obstacle course. The object of these kinds of games are to move your character around an imaginary world and acquire various objects to unlock further levels of the adventure. A good age to introduce kids into the world of puzzle platform gaming would probably be around 8 to 10 years of age when they begin to get better finger dexterity. Puzzle platform games can improve a young child’s hand-to-eye coordination and motor skills. These types of games can also improve the player’s critical thinking and problem-solving skills.

“Sackboy: A Big Adventure” is a platform game that features a carnival-style adventure with a simple story for kids to enjoy. Sackboy is a heroic stuffed doll-like character spin-off from PlayStation’s “LittleBIGPlanet” (LBP) video game series. This version of the game features 3D platforming in a story that takes place in the imaginary land of “Craftworld.”  The player helps Sackboy stop the villain from enslaving the sack people from the village of Loom. This game was the winner of the BAFTA Games Award (2021) for Best Family Game. “Sackboy: A Big Adventure” is available on: PlayStation 4 and PlayStation 5.

If you’re like me, you probably loved playing water squirt gun battles when you were a kid or paintball.  “Splatoon 2” is the video game world’s less messy version of a paint gun battle. Players use various paint guns to squirt ink over claimed territory during a face-paced turf war. New squirt weapons can be acquired and players can switch between using the human form or a weird looking, ink swimming, squid-like character called an “inkling.” It’s paint splattering fun for the entire family! Teams of up to four people can face off in this splatter-fest. A new version of the game is scheduled for release on September 9, 2022. Available on: Nintendo Switch.

Test your family’s intelligence with “Big Brain Academy: Brain vs. Brain.” This game challenges your ability to memorize numbers and objects as they flash by quickly on the screen. How well will you match up against the rest of the family? This is a terrific game for children and adults to play together. Trust me, your clever little kids will love busting your chops after they beat you. Each game is designed to challenge the player’s logic, math, and memory skills. Who will earn the mantle of the “smartest person in the family?”  The “Big Brain Academy: Brain vs. Brain” Ghost Clash mode allows you to compete against other family’s user data from around the world. See how your brainy family matches up against your know-it-all neighbors, or some smarty pants foreigners. Available on: Nintendo Switch.
